britain 1815-1918

WOMEN -360

·      Working class women – factory conditions had dramatically got better, they had fixed hours like men but it was difficult to accept that any progress had been made- women provided cheap labor that was often temporary
·      When having children things were tough as had to go straight back into long hours.
·      In 1911- 35 percent of women were in the domestic service
·      Unmarried girls would become shop assistants, cooks, mill hands
·      Married would do more dress making
·      Three-quarters of all British women were kept in different spheres to men and if they were they were worse paid
·      Only 3% of women were unionized where as 20% of men where in 1901

IMPACT ON LABOUR FORCE – 372

·      Shortages of work force in 1915 as all signed up for war
·      Women’s employment went from 3 million to 5 million from 1914-1918
·      One and half million were all new workers
·      In the short term- women’s employment in factories quickly declined as men reclaimed their previous employment
·      Long term – monopolized by women after war like shops, hotels and offices
·      One million people drew salaries after the war than before
·      White-collar jobs? – Women in white-color jobs helped this increase
·      War had brought on more of the black market but the upper class where still able to buy luxuries
·      Days lost to strikes rose from 2.5 mill in 1916 to six million 1918

NO GOING BACK

Main Sections:

facts and quotes

In each seciton I need to include reasons for change:
the economic
the people
industrilization
educaiton

BEFORE - ITS LINKS BACK TO WAR
Maid/Bulter/chef -  Had to work for every penny, poor living conditions, no mixing with the upper class
chauffer/doctor-they relied on work and doing service for others, worked hard for thier higher status than the lower class.
Earl/ countess /ladies - all there worries are about what there social calender is about, just run the estate, live seperate lives to downstairs, they spent a lot of time thinking about thier hobbies.
WOMEN- If lower class just had to focus on work then go home and run the famly, upper had to do little except go to social events- upper class not expected to work.

DURING- ITS LINKS BACK TO WAR

Maid/Bulter/chef - some made to go to war and then gained relationship with other classes- given more responsibilties. Had to fill in for extra jobs that needed to be done.
chauffer/doctor- some made to go to war and then gained relationship with other classes- given more responsibilties.
Earl/ countess /ladies -eststes put in danger so had to work, finacial problems when investments went down. Had to colaborate with lower classes and became a lot more equal.  ladies had the option to work, unserstaffed, friends or became generals died. they had to help ( house into home for the sick)
WOMEN- They began to work and fill in for what was usually the men's jobs, upper class had to help and work as nurses.

SOON AFTER- ITS LINKS BACK TO WAR

Maid/Bulter/chef -  They had to go back to old jobs however they wanted more. They had a much closer relationship with the upper class.
chauffer/doctor-  they went back to jobs, doctors busy, they had a closer realtionship with the upper class. more of a middle class was created. Better conditions for those in the lower/middle class.
Earl/ countess /ladies - had to try and keep thier estate going, women wanted to work more, more work needed of them. They had to gain more money.
WOMEN- had to go back to thier old work for a while as the men wanted thier jobs back. A bit later on they took a stand and didnt want to go back to thier old jobs 'they weren't prepared to put the apron back on'
Everyone was moving around between classes a lot more more classes were created.

TODAY AFTER : talk about the cnetury since the war actually started to show the time is right

Maid/Bulter/chef -  The lower class are much more equal and everyone is more well payed.
chauffer/doctor- They are equal to the other classes they just have more luxeries than the lower class.
Earl/ countess /ladies - They have to work just as much as anyone else they just have the land to look after, they intergrate with other classes and there is little seperation between classes.
WOMEN - they work just as much as men and there is lots more equality.

hows its more like the 1930's - much less change

Opening Paragraphs

Opening Paragraphs

During World War One more than fifteen million men and women were killed across europe. The ramifications were enormous. In Britain apart from the political and economic upheaval, the make up of its social fabric began to change forever. It was a slow process, but the sharply drawn lines between the position of men and women ,working and upper classes gradually began to re align themselves.

The facts and figures of the death and destruction that occurred during the First World War  were clearly documented at the time, but apart from the horrors of the bloody battle ground what were the long term effects of this brutal phase on our history? What happened to the soldiers who did return home and to their wives and families? How did the social fabric of Britain re knit itself after the terror and turmoil of the war years?

Before the First World War, throughout British society and in particular within the large households clear divisions could be seen between those who lived 'upstairs' and those who lived 'downstairs'. There was little intermingling across the divide. However after the tragedies and chaos of the war year things were never quite the same again. The different sectors of society had been thrown together in ways that could never have been foreseen, women were given jobs and working men positions of responsibility. Manpower and resources were stretched to breaking point, new systems  evolved over the war years and inevitably had a lasting impact as Britain began the painful process of rebuilding itself after the war?
